Arthur made his first team debut in April 1938 at the age of just 18 years old... it was rare in those days for youngsters to

be given a first team chance.

In season 38-39 he made a further 12 first team appearances before Alex Hastings regained his first team spot....

Sadly WW2 broke out at the start of 39-40 season with League football not resuming again until 1946-47

After being "de-mobbed" in 46-47 Arthur then played 23 league and 1 FA Cup game, scoring 2 league goals....

Season 47-48 saw Arthur play 39 of the 42 league games and another FA Cup game, scoring 3 more league goals

Season 48-49, probably Arthur's best, saw him play every game, 42 league (3 more goals) and 2 FA Cup (although it did include the Yeovil cup tie !!) 

This same season saw Arthur playing representative football for the Football League and then he was selected for the full England squad to go on a 2 week tour in Europe....

Season 49-50, and Arthur played 35 league games, scoring just the once. He was injured in the game against Bolton on 31 Dec which forced him to miss every game in the January.......

Season 50-51, and he played 37 league games ,no goals but also played in all 5 cup ties, scoring once vs Coventry.........

Season 51-52, an injury hit season meant he only played 26 league games scoring 2 goals.. 

Season 52-53 saw another 33 league games as well as 2 FA Cup ties played scoring once  ...........

Season 53-54, Arthur's penultimate, injury hit season with just 20 league games and just the 1 goal.....an injury away at Wolves

on 31 Aug  meant that Arthur only managed one game in four months...... 

Season 54-55 brought the curtain down on Arthur's career with just 2 league appearances, ironically against the two Sheffield clubs.....

That makes a total of 281 first team appearances in the league & FA Cup.........but what Arthur was most proud of was that ALL league appearances were in TOP FLIGHT football............
